History of Kit Barns

Sand Creek Post & Beam is thrilled to present Barns by Mail: Pre-cut Kit Barns by Mail-Order Catalog in the Midwest from 1900 to 1930. Researched and written by historic preservationist Joy Sears of Salem, Oregon, the article provides a fascinating look into the history of many of the Midwest’s finest traditional barns.

According to Ms. Sears, many of the original barn kits were constructed with small dimension lumber due to the scarcity of big timbers. Unlike those original kits, Sand Creek Post & Beam is pleased to be able to provide full-dimension timbers in each barn kit we produce.

Sand Creek Post & Beam would like to thank the author for graciously allowing us to post this important and informative work. If anyone knows of any existing barns built from kits in the early 1900’s or information on the companies that provided them we would love to hear from you. We will forward any information we received to Ms. Sears for possible future research.
